A feature of the works was a variety of sustainability initiatives, in particular water management. Council engaged Storm to prepare civil engineering designs for the car park and entrance path including an integrated drainage system. Storm was able to develop a fantastic Water Sensitive Urban Design landscaped feature comprising a terraced cascade and a beautiful rain garden enhanced by a stunning themed artwork depicting the sporting and nautical heritage of the site.
The works coincided with a terrible drought period in Sydney and so Council needed to ensure that any future water restrictions imposed on the site would not adversely affect the condition of the playing surface on the oval. Therefore, as part of the works, a stormwater harvesting scheme was integrated into the drainage designs.
Stormwater is pre-treated in a Gross Pollution Trap and Hydrofilters before being piped to a storage system with a disinfection unit and control room. From there is pumped into the oval’s irrigation system, saving millions of litres of water every year and ensuring the turf is of the quality required for top class sporting events.
